Tis the Season for Self Care

The holidays can be a wonderful time that is full of family get- togethers, festivities, and holiday cheer. At the same time, for some people the holidays can feel vulnerable as well. Since the holidays tend to be fast paced and intense at times, individuals may find themselves feeling lost in trying to keep up with everything that is happening around them. This factor may lead to people feeling high levels of stress, thus losing touch of themselves and their individual needs.

In general, day to day life sometimes makes it easy to get “lost in the noise around us,” but the holidays add other layers of distraction and stimulation. While holiday festivities can be positive and enjoyable, taking really good care of ourselves can ensure that we get the most out of the holiday season!

Some tips to help de-stress during the holiday season:

  • Engaging in mindfulness techniques (Listening to guided mediations on YouTube or through apps, etc)
  • Engaging in self-soothing activities (Utilizing our five senses can be particularly grounding.)
  • Being honest with yourself and how you feel
  • Checking in with yourself and determining what you need in specific moments
  • Adjusting expectations (more details on this below)
  • Setting healthy boundaries with others
  • Reaching out to a mental health therapist for support

Regarding mental health, anxiety levels may increase when our own expectations don’t match reality. Sometimes our expectations need to be adjusted, and that’s okay! Being gentle with ourselves and others can be extremely helpful, especially during the holidays. Setting boundaries with others can help us feel more in control. Additionally, while on the theme of mental health, is it important to note that levels of grief can also heighten during the holiday season, as we may find ourselves missing loved ones even more. Finding ways to honor loved ones during the holidays can bring us comfort, while we grieve and hold their memories in our hearts.

The holidays can be special, lively, and uplifting times, but it is crucial to stay in touch with ourselves and our own individual needs during this time. Prioritizing self-care, engaging in activities that bring us comfort, setting healthy boundaries, and adjusting expectations when needed can all support our mental health during this time.

Happy Holidays everyone!! Wishing you a joyful holiday season that is full of comfort, uplifting experiences, and all the things you love and enjoy!
