What is Functional Psychotherapy?

Functional psychotherapy uses traditional methods of psychotherapy along with non-traditional therapies of holistic healing to create a fuller integration between the mind, body and spirit, and to accomplish the deepest level of healing possible. At our practice, holistic psychotherapy is delivered by healthcare providers who are licensed clinical social workers, licensed social workers, Licensed Mental Health Practitioners, Medical Doctors, certified hypnotherapists, certified personal trainers and who have master’s and doctoral degrees in social work and medicine.

What conditions can be treated by Functional Psychotherapy?

In our practice, our clinicians specialize in the treatment of physical illness and disease, emotional issues, family dynamics, stage of life issues, work-related issues, sexual abuse, trauma, addiction (substances, food and unwanted behaviors), and stress and anxiety. Additionally, we work with various governmental agencies such as DCF in order to assist the parents to be the best parents they can possibly be and parent their children independently. Functional psychotherapy does not take the place of traditional medicine, but rather works in concert with other treatment methods to help the healing process. Functional psychotherapy primarily looks at specific areas of the body from an emotional, spiritual and energetic perspective and is designed to help heal the origin of the disease. Our patients report relief from Anxiety, weight loss/gain, lifting of Depression, new or better relationships and communication, deciding to marry or end a relationship.

Who can benefit from Functional Psychotherapy?

Each patient responds differently to functional psychotherapy. We recommend that patients attend each session with an open mind to receive the full benefits of the process. Even patients currently prescribed psychotropic medications for mental health or who are under psychiatric treatment can benefit from functional psychotherapy. However, patients who present with active psychotic processes or who pose a danger to themselves or others will be referred to an appropriate facility until they are more able to benefit from this process.

How does the clinician decide what are my psychological and or physiological needs and which type of therapy to use?

The work starts with what is going on now that’s troubling you? How did it start? What do you want to have happen instead? And from that place, we serve to guide and help you make the change you want. The change we speak of is in you – your thoughts, beliefs, choices and actions. We can and will talk about others in relationship to you, but the only place you really have leverage is in yourself. During the first session, which lasts from 45 to 90 minutes, the patient and the clinician will evaluate the patient’s issues and establish goals for treatment. Once it is decided that our practice is the right place for the patient, subsequent sessions are scheduled to continue the evaluation and begin the treatment which is usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. During each session, the clinician will focus on addressing the patient’s specific needs, allowing for greater flexibility between the different therapies as treatment progresses.
