The transgender community has been increasingly targeted by anti-trans activists, casting a shadow over the critical issue of transgender youth’s mental health and well-being. As we observe Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, we must, as mental health professionals, stand up and speak out on behalf of all LGBTQ+ youth, especially the transgender, non-gender conforming, gender fluid, gender queer youth targeted explicitly by so-called “Parents-Rights Groups.”
Suicide is a haunting specter that casts its shadow over the lives of far too many young people. Shockingly, it is the second leading cause of death among those aged 10 to 24 in the United States (Hedegaard, Curtin, & Warner, 2018). However, when we shine a light on the data, a harrowing truth becomes clear — lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth face a disproportionately higher risk.
LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual and cisgender peers (Johns et al., 2019; Johns et al., 2020). These numbers are staggering and demand our immediate attention. The Trevor Project, a leading organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ mental health, estimates that over 1.8 million LGBTQ+ youth aged 13 to 24 seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. — a heart-wrenching statistic equates to at least one LGBTQ+ youth attempting suicide every 45 seconds.
The 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health by The Trevor Project paints an even bleaker picture. It reveals that 45% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. This includes more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent the lived experiences, pain, and struggles of countless LGBTQ+ youth nationwide.
According to, The Trevor Project, “LGBTQ youth are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity but rather placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society.” (https://www.thetrevorproject.org/resources/article/facts-about-lgbtq-youth-suicide/)
For transgender and gender-diverse youth, self-discovery and self-acceptance can be complex and emotionally challenging. Their unique experiences and challenges make access to gender-affirming mental health care essential. This type of care provides crucial support and can play a pivotal role in lowering the alarming rates of suicidality within this vulnerable population.
Gender-affirming mental health care is a holistic approach that acknowledges and validates an individual’s gender identity, providing them with the support, resources, and tools needed to navigate their journey with dignity and respect.
Research consistently shows that transgender and gender-diverse youth who have access to gender-affirming mental health care experience lower rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. This care acts as a lifeline, offering a safe space for these young individuals to explore their identities and cope with the unique stressors they encounter (Tordoff, D.M, et al 2022).
The journey toward self-discovery and emotional well-being in mental health care is uniquely personal. For LGBTQ+ youth and their families, this journey can be marked by distinct challenges and needs requiring an approach beyond the ordinary.
